This was Albert Ayler's second album for the legendary Impulse label and to me it was his masterpiece, Albert's earlier works for ESP were all superb especially the mighty "The Bells" LP but for me it all came together on "Love Cry" which was recorded shortly after the tragic death of John Coltrane in

"Love Cry" is an album that is often spoken poorly of as the beginning of the end for Albert Ayler, the point where he started selling out, take your pick. Such accusations are a bit baseless-- the album, recored in two sessions in , is in many ways a reflection of part of Ayler's live shows/5(10).

recorded late in Aylers sadly short career in Love Cry and the Last Album (actually are now many last recordings: mainly live to enjoy) offer some tracks featuring the trademark Ayler sound of free, slightly histrionic sax playing deep rooted in the spirituals and blues of his homeland. free jazz icon and to some patron saint of the avane Reviews: 9.

Brilliant late work from Ayler – 2 albums in a single set! The Love Cry session has none of the jazz-meets-other music feel of some of the other Impulse albums – and is more in the straight expressive style of the ESP recordings. Tracks are more reined in here – with some short themes that are almost a distillation of the freedom Ayler had been expressing for a few years Brand: Impulse (Label).
